Photo by @jonathan_irish // Happy national bird day! I’ve always been someone who was more interested in the megafauna than in the tiny flying creatures. Sure, I loved seeing the large predator birds, like the American Bald Eagle. I was particularly excited when, on my way to Antarctica, I saw my first Wandering Albatross, the great traveling bird. And who doesn’t love seeing a penguin waddling and squawking around? But that has mostly been the extent of my interest in feathered life. However, something has changed recently and I am finding myself fascinated by the number and variety of birds on the planet. It is really incredible. Identifying them is fun. like a game. and there’s a joy in recording the sighting. I even started keeping a birding life list to which I can continuously add. And now, I feel the urge to go out and find what little flying feathered friends are about, maybe even spotting a rare one! Birding is fun, and I think 2018 is where I will finally start to look at birdlife (big and small) as well as the lions, tigers, and bears. Here’s a shot from a fantastic National Wildlife Refuge called Blackwater (on Maryland’s Eastern Shore). In the winter, thousands upon thousands of beautiful white snow geese gather here. Their morning and evening flights as they suddenly explode into the air and act as a single group will take take your breath away. I’ve seen these beautiful geese before, but this time they officially went down as a sighting on my new birding life list. ✔️

RIU (@mr_riu) prefers to express himself in black and white. “The way I work, I do not use any colored paper, any coloring or any glue. I think it’s about simplicity and cleanliness,” says the artist from Japan who creates complex patterns out of a single sheet of paper.

Depending on the piece, it can take more than 30 hours before RIU completes production. But despite the tiring nature of his work, which requires a lot of concentration, according to RIU, it is precisely this concentrated feeling of fatigue that leads to the feeling of accomplishment that follows. “I hope that I can help people find strength in their lives,” he says.
